Weixin Pay, a mobile payment and digital wallet service by WeChat, has partnered with PayNet to enable Chinese Mainland travelers to make payments using DuitNow QR at over 2 million merchants across Malaysia.

This integration simplifies transactions for visitors, removing the need for currency exchange or separate top-ups, while offering a familiar payment method.

Local merchants are expected to benefit from greater visibility among Chinese consumers.

In a related development, Hong Leong Bank (HLB) announced that its HLB DuitNow QR merchants can now accept Weixin Pay.

Merchants, such as The Hub café at DC Mall, are prepared to offer this payment option to Chinese tourists.

To complete transactions, merchants display their HLB DuitNow QR code at the point of sale, and tourists can scan it using their WeChat app.

The transaction is processed with automatic currency conversion from Chinese Yuan to Malaysian Ringgit.

Additionally, HLB BizBuddy DuitNow QR merchants are also able to accept QR payments from visitors from Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia, offering a broader payment solution for travelers.

This update comes as Malaysia sees an increase in Chinese tourist arrivals, with 1.47 million visitors in 2023 and a target of 5 million for 2024.
