Malaysians can now apply for a replacement MyKad through the MyGOV Malaysia app without visiting a government counter to start the process.
The Ministry of Digital announced the service in a Facebook post, outlining how users can submit their applications online.
To apply, users must download or update the MyGOV Malaysia app and log in to their accounts.
They can then select the MyKad Replacement service under the Birth & Personal Identification category.
Applicants must fill in the required information and upload supporting documents if requested.
Once submitted, they will receive further instructions or confirmation on their application.
The ministry said the service allows Malaysians to start the replacement process at any time, subject to system availability.
The announcement did not specify whether applicants would still need to visit a government office to collect their replacement MyKad.
Authorities Warn Against MyKad Rental and Misuse
The announcement comes amid concerns over MyKad misuse, including reports of Malaysians renting out their identity cards to foreign nationals for as little as RM100.
Deputy Home Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah told Parliament on 21 October that individuals who rent out or hand over their MyKad to foreigners could face up to three years in prison, a fine of RM20,000 or both, Bernama reported.
The National Registration Department conducted 4,174 enforcement operations between 2022 and September 2026, resulting in 1,868 arrests.
Authorities also prosecuted 577 cases involving the use of fake MyKad or identity cards belonging to others during the same period.
