The Amazon Web Services (AWS) is expanding its presence in Malaysia by going live with the new AWS Region in Kuala Lumpur in 2024.
AWS will invest RM 25.5 billion to build the new AWS Region in Malaysia by 2037 to support the country’s digitisation ambitions.
This will give developers, startups, enterprises, and government organizations greater choice for running their applications and serving end users from data centers located in Malaysia.
It will also enable customers with data residency preferences to store data securely in Malaysia, and help customers to achieve even lower latency and serve demand for cloud services across Southeast Asia.
The company had opened its newest office in Kuala Lumpur on 1 June 2023, spanning more than 32,000 square feet, signifies AWS’ ongoing commitment to Malaysia since local operations began in the country in 2016.
AWS also commits to upskilling Malaysian citizens, having trained more than 50,000 people in Malaysia with cloud skills since 2017.
The firm is collaborating with World Education Placement Services to provide free cloud computing skills development and job training through the AWS re/Start programme.
This is a free, 12-week, entry-level cloud skills programme that helps prepare unemployed and underemployed learners for vital careers in cloud computing, and connects them with employment opportunities at local employers.
The AWS Academy also provides a free, ready-to-teach cloud computing curriculum to tertiary institutions such as Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) and the University of Malaya. This prepares students to pursue industry-recognised certifications and in-demand jobs.
Al Rajhi Bank, Bank Islam, Cancer Research Malaysia, the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (DPCCE), the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Maxis, and PETRONAS are among AWS’ clients in the country.
“In Malaysia, we’re not just building infrastructure, we’re spurring a wave of digital transformation and investing in a digital workforce that will shape the nation’s future.
The new AWS Region will empower Malaysia to accelerate cloud adoption in the public sector and help agencies transform the way citizen services are delivered.”
said Chuah Seng Heng, Country Manager for Worldwide Public Sector at AWS in Malaysia.
“Malaysian customers like 1233RF, PETRONAS, Bank Islam, Principal Asset Management, Gentari, Maxis, and Carsome are already leveraging the world’s broadest and most adopted cloud technology to accelerate innovation, drive productivity, fuel economic growth in Malaysia and beyond.
With the launch of our AWS Malaysia Region in 2024, we are excited to provide a further stimulus to Malaysia in its journey to be a leader in digital technology across the region, and in the process build a better future for all Malaysians.”
said Pete Murray, Country Manager at AWS in Malaysia.
