NTT DATA Payment Services, formerly known as GHL Systems, has expanded its DuitNow QR service to include cross-border payments.
This enables merchants across Malaysia to accept payments from international visitors using platforms such as Alipay+, Weixin Pay, UnionPay, BC Card (South Korea), QRIS (Indonesia), NETS (Singapore), and ITMX (Thailand).
This expansion supports NTT DATA’s network of over 480,000 merchant touchpoints and aims to capitalise on the increasing number of tourists, providing them with seamless payment options.
Tealive, a major tea chain in Southeast Asia, is among the first to adopt this technology, integrating Weixin Pay at key destinations like Genting, Langkawi, and KLCC as part of a foreign exchange campaign promoting cashless transactions for Chinese visitors.
Data from PayNet reveals a significant increase in inbound QR transactions, surging by over 550% from RM26.4 million to RM167 million.
With a potential user base of over 3 billion across China, India, and ASEAN, the economic impact is substantial.
The initiative also benefits SMEs, offering access to a wider customer base and reducing reliance on cash transactions.
Currently, over 80% of DuitNow merchants accept these cross-border payments, with support from major Malaysian banks and payment providers, including AmBank, CIMB, OCBC, Hong Leong Bank, Maybank, UOB, Public Bank, Razer, Boost, Finexus, and Touch ‘N Go.
NTT DATA plans to onboard more in the future.
Kevin Lee, CEO of GHL Malaysia said,
“The launch of DuitNow QR Cross-Border marks a significant milestone for both GHL and the broader payment ecosystem in Malaysia. It empowers our merchant partners, particularly MSMEs, by offering them a secure, convenient, and efficient payment solution.
This also provides tourists with a hassle-free way to make purchases, thereby driving increased spending and enhancing the overall travel experience in Malaysia.”
Gary Yeoh, Chief Marketing Officer of PayNet said,
