MDEC and the Ministry of Digital have withdrawn support for Malaysia Blockchain Week (MYBW) 2026, following backlash over the event’s after-party booking of DJ and influencer Ms Pui Yi.
In a bilingual LinkedIn post, MDEC said neither the agency nor the Ministry of Digital took part in planning, approving, or promoting the after-party, including selecting its guests.
MDEC said it had directed organisers to remove all materials bearing the name, logo, or image of the Ministry of Digital, MDEC, and the Minister of Digital.
The agency said claims that it or the ministry approved, endorsed, or held any connection to the after-party were untrue, and that organisers had confirmed this themselves in their own statement.
MYBW’s earlier apology had thanked the Ministry and MDEC for their “continued support” of the event.
Neither MDEC’s post nor any separate statement from the Ministry has directly addressed that wording.
MYBW’s Earlier Apology
MYBW apologised on 27 July after Malaysian social media users criticised its decision to feature Ms Pui Yi, whose early career included content on OnlyFans, as special guest DJ.
The organiser’s statement said the Ministry and MDEC “were not consulted on, involved in, or associated with the selection of the featured individual, or the organisation and promotion of the after-party.”
MDEC’s post confirms, for the first time, that MDEC and the Ministry or any government body have withdrawn support from the event itself, not just the after-party.
Neither MDEC’s post nor MYBW’s earlier statement has said whether Ms Pui Yi’s appearance is still going ahead.
MYBW 2026 will run as planned on 29 and 30 July at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, with the after-party set for 30 July at ING Livehouse KL.
