SoftBank Group, Grab and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) have signed a framework agreement to explore the development of an AI and digital infrastructure platform in Sarawak.
The three parties will collaborate on a roadmap for the platform’s phased development, with PETROS contributing expertise in energy supply solutions and supporting infrastructure.
Beyond the proposed platform, the collaboration will explore opportunities across the broader AI value chain, including AI computing and services, advanced technologies, robotics, and local workforce and community development.
What each partner brings
SoftBank will contribute its global technology and AI ecosystem, drawing on its expertise in AI infrastructure, advanced computing, semiconductors and physical AI, which involves AI systems that interact with the physical world, such as robots.
Grab will bring its Southeast Asian digital ecosystem, applied AI capabilities and regional network of customers and partners.
PETROS will draw on its experience under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap and its role as Master Developer of the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub (KLCH).
Its contributions will include energy supply solutions, supporting infrastructure and local engagement, alongside efforts to strengthen participation across Sarawak’s supply chain.
How the proposed AI platform aligns with state and national plans
The three companies view Sarawak as a potential location for AI infrastructure and high-value technology industries. Through this collaboration, the partners aim to support Malaysia’s ambition to become a regional hub for AI and digital infrastructure.
According to the companies, the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s goal of achieving high-income status by 2030 under its Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Through this collaboration, the partners aim to strengthen Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and connectivity, including the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) initiative.
At the national level, they also aim to advance the country’s digital economy and AI agenda under the Ekonomi MADANI framework and the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan.
The partners aim to attract strategic investment, develop local talent and capabilities, and encourage technology-driven economic activity across Sarawak and the wider region.
The companies did not disclose financial terms or a timeline for the proposed platform’s development.
