Alibaba Cloud has opened two new data centres in Johor, marking its largest infrastructure presence in Southeast Asia to date.

The new public cloud region brings Alibaba Cloud’s data centre footprint in Malaysia to five facilities.

The company first established a twin data centre presence in the country in 2017 and added a third facility last year.

The expansion is part of Alibaba’s previously announced US$53 billion investment in AI and cloud infrastructure in 2025.

Globally, Alibaba Cloud now operates 104 availability zones across 32 regions.

    Expanding AI-ready infrastructure in Malaysia

The Johor facilities will offer cloud services covering compute, storage, containers, networking, big data, security, databases and cloud-native services.

The region is expected to improve resilience, reduce latency and strengthen disaster recovery for businesses in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

Alibaba Cloud also plans to introduce a suite of agentic AI services in Malaysia in the second half of this year, including AgentRun, STAROps, ACS Agent Sandbox, Agent Security Center, AI Security Guardrails 2.0 and Agentic SOC.

These services are designed to help enterprises build, manage and run AI agents in a secure environment.

Choong Hon Keat, General Manager of Malaysia, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, said,

“Malaysia remains a strategic key market for us in Southeast Asia, and we are deeply committed to empowering enterprises of all sizes on their cloud and AI journey with our robust and secure cloud and AI technologies.

This expansion in Malaysia is a direct response to surging customer demand as local businesses scale cloud-native operations and integrate AI at scale.”

    Customer use cases in Malaysia

Several Malaysian companies are already using Alibaba Cloud’s cloud and AI technologies.

TNG Digital, the operator of TNG eWallet, is using Alibaba Cloud technologies, including a unified data platform, to improve search and recommendation capabilities on its platform.

YTL AI Labs has also worked with Alibaba Cloud’s AI scientists and architects on the ILMU family of models, as well as products such as Ryt AI for Ryt Bank, ILMUchat, ILMU Claw and the ILMU API Platform.

The ILMU models cover Malay-language AI use cases across text, image and voice.

AI-powered creative platforms Morphyx.io and TabSpace.ai are using Alibaba Cloud’s video generation models and Model Studio to support visual and video generation workflows.

Morphyx.io is also using Qwen LLM for script generation, translation and speech-related workflows.
