Microsoft is expanding its cloud infrastructure in Malaysia with a second region in Johor Bahru.
The upcoming Southeast Asia 3 (SEA3) region will complement Malaysia West in Greater Kuala Lumpur, which opened in May 2025.
Microsoft expects SEA3 to eventually become its largest cloud region in Southeast Asia, adding capacity for cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.
The two regions will give businesses more options to distribute workloads, strengthen disaster recovery and maintain services during disruptions.
This could benefit banks and financial institutions that depend on critical systems around the clock.
More Cloud Options for Malaysian Businesses
Malaysia West currently offers close to 200 generally available cloud services across three availability zones.
Microsoft noted that not every application needs a multi-region setup, as multiple availability zones within one region may offer sufficient reliability with less complexity.
Malaysian organisations already using Microsoft’s cloud services include PETRONAS, AFFIN Bank, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN).

Laurence Si, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia, said,
“The organisations that scale AI fastest think platform, not a single datacenter region.
A multi-region strategy can strengthen resilience, unlock capacity where and when it is needed, and create room to grow as Malaysia’s AI ambitions evolve.”
