Financial institutions have invested heavily in securing digital onboarding and account opening journeys.

Identity verification, document checks, and fraud screening have become standard practice across banking, fintech, and digital financial services.

Yet despite these investments, fraudsters are increasingly shifting their focus beyond onboarding and targeting trusted customer accounts that have already been established.

This evolution is creating new challenges for organisations that must protect customers without introducing friction that negatively impacts the digital experience.

Entrust‘s webinar explores how account takeover attacks are evolving, why traditional controls are being challenged, and what financial institutions can do to strengthen account protection across the customer lifecycle.

Trusted Accounts Become the New Target

Account takeover (ATO) attacks have become more sophisticated as cybercriminals combine stolen credentials, phishing campaigns, social engineering tactics, and AI-enabled impersonation techniques to gain access to legitimate accounts.

Once access is obtained, attackers can exploit trusted relationships and perform unauthorised transactions, enroll new devices, change account information, or initiate fraudulent account recovery requests.

These attacks often occur after onboarding, during moments that traditionally receive less security scrutiny than account creation.

As a result, many organisations are discovering that strong onboarding controls alone are no longer sufficient to address modern fraud threats.

    Traditional Authentication Is Falling Short

The challenge for financial institutions is balancing security with customer experience.

Customers increasingly expect seamless digital interactions, while fraud teams are under pressure to stop sophisticated threats before financial losses occur.

Conventional authentication methods, including passwords and one-time passcodes, can be vulnerable when attackers successfully manipulate customers or compromise credentials.

Fraud prevention teams therefore need new approaches that focus on validating the identity of the person behind a transaction, not simply the device or credentials being used.

    Stronger Checks at Critical Moments

A growing number of organisations are moving toward identity-centric security strategies designed to strengthen trust at critical moments throughout the customer journey.

Rather than applying the same level of verification to every interaction, identity-centric approaches evaluate risk and increase assurance when higher-risk activities occur.

Examples include account recovery requests, device enrollment, profile updates, high-value transactions, or unusual account behaviors.

By applying stronger identity verification and phishing-resistant authentication only when needed, organisations can improve security while maintaining a positive customer experience.

Rethinking Trust Across the Customer Lifecycle

In this on-demand webinar, financial services leaders discuss how the fraud landscape is changing and what it means for banks, fintechs, and digital-first institutions.

The session examines why trusted customer accounts are becoming preferred targets for fraudsters, where vulnerabilities commonly emerge beyond onboarding, and how organisations can reduce exposure to account takeover attacks.

Viewers will gain insights into practical strategies for improving identity assurance and strengthening protection across digital channels without increasing unnecessary friction.

The discussion also explores the growing importance of phishing-resistant authentication and modern identity verification technologies.

As attackers become more capable of bypassing traditional defenses, many organisations are evaluating methods that deliver stronger confidence in the identity of legitimate account holders.

These approaches can help reduce fraud losses, improve digital trust, and support long-term customer relationships while enabling secure growth initiatives.

For fraud leaders, digital banking teams, identity professionals, and risk executives, protecting accounts after onboarding has become a business-critical priority.

The question is no longer whether an account originated from a verified identity, but whether the person interacting with that account today is truly the legitimate account holder.

Organisations that adapt their fraud strategies to address this reality will be better positioned to detect threats earlier, protect customer relationships, and strengthen resilience against the next generation of account takeover attacks.

Watch the on-demand webinar by Entrust here to learn how financial institutions are strengthening identity assurance and preventing account takeover.
