Hong Leong Bank (HLB) is giving Malaysian travellers more ways to pay overseas by adding Alipay+ to its existing QR payment network.
PayNet recently expanded DuitNow QR payments to China, Hong Kong, South Korea, the Philippines and Laos.
HLB joins Maybank and CIMB as the first banks to support the service.
Customers can make instant payments directly from their ringgit bank accounts through the HLB Connect app without downloading another app or topping up a separate e-wallet.
Depending on the merchant and payment network, they can scan a merchant’s QR code or present their HLB QR Pay code for scanning.
HLB Connect already supports cross-border QR payments through PayNet’s links with Singapore’s NETS, Thailand’s PromptPay, Indonesia’s QRIS and Cambodia’s Bakong.
The bank also connects to UnionPay International and Weixin Pay, providing access to more than 120 million QR-enabled merchants across China, Hong Kong, Macao and Thailand.
Customers can also link eligible HLB cards to Weixin Pay or use Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay when travelling abroad.

Kevin Lam, HLB’s Group Managing Director and CEO, said,
“When customers travel, they want to know they can pay easily and with confidence. Bringing these networks together gives them more places to pay through HLB Connect, alongside the cards and other payment options they already use.
Our cross-border partners help us make this possible by connecting our customers to the continuously expanding payment networks that merchants use in their markets and countries.”
Payment acceptance, supported methods, funding options and market availability vary by network and service.
