Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of its AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region, expanding its presence in Southeast Asia.
This new region allows developers, businesses, and government organisations in Malaysia to run applications and store data locally, while also serving end users with reduced latency.
AWS has committed to long-term investment in Malaysia with plans to invest over US$6.2 billion (approximately RM 29.2 billion) through 2038.
This investment is expected to contribute approximately US$12.1 billion (RM 57.3 billion) to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and support more than 3,500 full-time jobs annually during the period.
These jobs will span various sectors, including construction, engineering, and telecommunications.
The launch of the AWS region in Malaysia is part of AWS’s broader expansion strategy.
With this addition, AWS now operates 108 Availability Zones across 34 geographic regions globally.
The new Malaysian region comprises three Availability Zones, each designed to enhance reliability and reduce latency for customers.
Prominent Malaysian organisations, such as GXBank, Bursa Malaysia, CelcomDigi, and PETRONAS, are among the active AWS customers who will benefit from the new region.
The launch aligns with the country’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which emphasizes digital innovation and competitiveness.
Tengku Zafrul, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment Trade & Industry (MITI), highlighted the significance of the AWS launch, stating that it supports Malaysia’s vision to build a highly skilled, innovative, and sustainable economy.
AWS said that it will continue to support Malaysia’s workforce development, having trained over 100,000 individuals in cloud skills since 2017.
Its education initiatives, including AWS Academy and AWS re/Start, aim to equip the next generation with cloud expertise, further strengthening the digital capabilities of the country.
AWS is also committed to sustainability, with efforts to operate on 100% renewable energy and plans to be water positive by 2030.
The new region in Malaysia will benefit from these sustainability initiatives.
“Building on AWS, we were operationally ready to launch GXBank within 16 months, serving over 750k customers with 13 million transactions in just eight months.
We are delighted to welcome the AWS Region in Malaysia, which will provide Malaysian businesses, entrepreneurs, and SMEs access to scalable and secure digital infrastructure to help them deliver seamless customer experiences.”
said Pei-Si Lai, CEO at GXBank.
“The new AWS Region in Malaysia enables organisations across Asia Pacific to unlock the full potential of the world’s most extensive and reliable cloud, helping customers deploy advanced applications with a broad set of AWS technologies like AI and ML.
Malaysia’s rapidly growing digital economy requires access to secure, resilient, and sustainable cloud infrastructure. With today’s launch, AWS is proud to support Malaysia’s digital transformation and help accelerate its role as a regional hub for AI.”
said Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS.
